The 13th Floor

The Legend:
Marketing:
8.0 I don't remember ever having seen a trailer in the theater for this movie, but I will say they pushed it like no one's business when it hit the video stores. I don't think I've rented a movie in six months that didn't have a trailer for this movie during the previews
Performances:
8.5 For a group of folks that have never had staring roles, they work well in this movie. I can't help but admit that I kept quoting Edgar from Men in Black every time Vincent D'Onofrio was on screen. Craig Bierk, Armin Mueller-Stahl and Gretchen Mol do well with the leads
Production Design:
9.0 I don't know what kind of budget they had, but to design a high-tech lab, some post modernistic apartments, and a good chunk of 1930's L.A. they had to have some kind of money, and they used it well.
Score:
4.0 I'm not gonna waste your time talking about what just ain't there.
Overall Rating:
7.25 A far cry better than most sci-fi movies, but derivative.

I had absolutely low expectations for this film. I have to say that flat out. I really was expecting a cheap rip-off B flick that was trying to capitalize on the popularity of The Matrix. What I got wasn't exactly what I was expecting.

I'm not going to say I was "surprised", but I was pleased.

The whole premise of the film is the creation of a completely realistic simulated world, that you can enter into and interact with, that is just as real as if you were there. That's no secret, and you can see the borrowed overtones. Let's just say the final twist in the film is rather Shakespearean.

I have to put this one on the shelf with Point Break. You know what's coming, and there's no new ground broken here, but it is entertaining and well done. Still a solid rent.

The Bottom Line
Deja Vu. That's the bottom line in this film. It's well directed and acted. Production values are good. The story is solid and something that you can get into, but when push comes to shove, this is a gimmick film. If you couldn't get enough of the Matrix check this one out.
