Mystery Alaska

The Legend:
Marketing:
6.5 A dismal marketing campaign for a movie that could have been sold so easily...
Performances:
9.5 A solid cast with great performances by Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds and Hank Azaria(that's right, the guy who does the voice of Apu on the Simpsons)
Production Design:
9.0 I loved the look of this movie. Kinda, Northern Exposure meets Fargo
Score:
7 Respectable soundtrack. No outstanding pieces, but not bad.
Overall Rating:
8.7 Check it out Mamma...!

Solid, original entertainment.

Great script, great performances, great directing, and great production values. All this about a small town hockey team, who get's a shot at playing an NHL team. The last "Sports Movie" I saw of this caliber was Major League. No kidding, it was that good.

The thing that constantly amazes me is the fact that Russell Crowe never looks the same in any two movies that he does. He really does become the character that he's portraying. (I'm starting to wonder if his movie career is going to be something like "Where's Waldo". "Can you find Russell Crowe in this movie?!...") If you think I'm kidding about that, check out Mystery Alaska, Gladiator, L.A. Confidentrial, and The Insider. Yep, that's all the same guy.

If you like a movie with a witty premise, some fun characters, and some real drama, you will enjoy this film.

The Bottom Line
I know that reviews on this movie were mixed, and that I have an unfair bias for Russell Crowe, but all that aside, I still think this is a solid film. The "Rocky" of hockey films. And not "Rocky II, III, IV, or V. I mean "Rocky".

just want to tell me how wrong I am...
